She Carried Her Own Light

A Portrait Cycle Inspired by the Life of My Grandmother

This series traces the emotional journey of a woman born into privilege yet denied the freedom to choose her own path. Through four portraits, the work explores innocence, sacrifice, endurance, and ultimately the rediscovery of love and selfhood.

The Weight of Gold

Born into an aristocratic family, she entered the world surrounded by comfort, beauty, and expectation. At this stage of life, her future remained unwritten. She existed in a state of innocence where dreams had not yet encountered duty.

As she came of age, family wealth and social standing became more important than her own wishes. In order to preserve inheritance and security, she was given in marriage to a man much older than herself.

The ornate headpiece and rich garments symbolize the privileges surrounding her, yet they also become symbols of confinement. Though adorned in gold, she carries an emotional burden invisible to the outside world.

This work explores the paradox of sacrifice: how a woman can appear surrounded by abundance while quietly surrendering her freedom.
